10 Self-Care Habits Every Creator Should Practice Regularly
Learning to Balance Passion and Self-Care as a Longtime Content Creator
I was sitting on the kitchen floor with my laptop in my lap, but I couldn’t bring myself to open it. Just the thought made me feel sick. I had so many tasks waiting for me: writing posts for clients, reviewing a sponsored blog post, sharing my daily Instagram post… I didn’t understand what I was feeling at the time, but now I know: it was burnout.
It’s been 5 years since then, and I’ve felt this way or come close to it many times. I’m someone who dives in with full energy when I’m excited, but all that constant effort can lead straight to burnout. I’ve learned how to manage it, though.
After 15 years as a content creator, for both my own projects and clients, I’ve been through many stages of what it means to put a part of yourself out there every day. The online world moves fast and brings plenty of challenges, which really pushes you to understand yourself better.
1. Set Boundaries Around Work Hours
As a creator, the line between work and life can get blurry. Setting clear work hours can help prevent overwork and burnout. Think of it as a “closing time” for your brain. Try setting a start and end time each day and stick to it. If you feel pressure to stay available, remember this: your creativity needs rest to thrive.
2. Schedule Regular Breaks
Taking breaks might feel counterproductive, but they actually boost your productivity. A quick break can recharge your mental energy, improve focus, and help you avoid creative blocks. Use techniques like the Pomodoro method, where you work for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. Step away, stretch, or grab a snack—whatever helps you reset.
3. Create a “Digital Detox” Routine
We spend so much time online, but constant connectivity is exhausting. A regular digital detox, even if it’s just a few hours a week, can work wonders for your mental health. Try setting aside time each week where you completely unplug. No social media, no emails—just a break from the noise. You’ll come back with a clearer mind and fresher ideas.
4. Set Realistic Goals for Each Week
Big dreams are amazing, but they can feel overwhelming if you don’t break them down. Each week, set small, realistic goals that move you forward without overloading you. And when you reach those goals, celebrate! Every little step is a win. This approach not only keeps you motivated but also gives you a steady sense of accomplishment.
5. Practice Meditation
A few minutes of mindfulness each day can calm your mind and help you stay focused. Whether it’s deep breathing, meditation, or simply pausing to be present, mindfulness helps clear mental clutter and eases stress. Apps like Headspace or Calm can help you get started, or you can keep it simple with a 5-minute breathing exercise.
6. Get Outdoors and Move Your Body
Fresh air and physical movement are instant mood-boosters! You don’t have to do an intense workout—just a daily walk or a few stretches can make a big difference. Moving your body helps release stress, clear your mind, and boost your creativity. Nature has a way of resetting us, so get outside when you can. I walk every day for 30 minutes.
7. Foster a Supportive Community
Creating alone can feel isolating. A supportive community, whether online or offline, helps you stay grounded and motivated. Find people who understand the creative journey—join groups, engage with fellow creators, or even form a small accountability group. A supportive circle reminds you that you’re not alone and that we’re all figuring it out together.
8. Declutter and Organize Your Workspace
A cluttered workspace can lead to a cluttered mind. Take a few minutes each day to tidy up, or set aside time for a weekly “reset” of your space. Keeping things organized helps you focus better and makes it easier to get into a productive mindset. Plus, a clean space just feels good!
9. Make Sleep a Non-Negotiable Priority
Sleep isn’t just rest—it’s essential for creativity, mental clarity, and emotional well-being. Try to set a consistent bedtime and create a wind-down routine that tells your brain it’s time to relax. Limit screens an hour before bed and focus on calming activities instead. A good night’s sleep is one of the best things you can do for your mind and your creativity.
10. Practice Self-Compassion and Let Go of Perfectionism
Perfectionism is a trap that keeps so many creators from moving forward. Remind yourself that it’s okay to make mistakes. You don’t have to be perfect to be impactful! Be kind to yourself, celebrate your progress, and remember that you’re constantly growing. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s to keep creating, learning, and enjoying the journey.
P.S. You’ve created amazing content all week. Now it’s time to let yourself rest and recharge. What are your plans for the weekend? Share them below, and let’s inspire each other to truly unwind!
It's always the perfectionism that makes me stray.... and the pesky screens before bed (that last look just to make sure I don't miss any 'breaking news' is my nemesis) – great list, thank you
Love this! Perfectionism is something I am releasing slowly - and it’s allowing me to progress further in my creative endeavors.
I also totally agree with you on moving your body! I love to go on walks to clear my mind- it’s the best! Great article. ☺️
